Thank you Dr. James for your personal reflections on Professionalism. The original professionals -doctors (health vs disease), Lawyers and judges(right vs wrong) and ministers of faith (good vs bad) all reflect the concept of professionalism being one who works for public good. Now in post modern times professionalism gets mixed up with the political economy and we have professional footballers, professional race car drivers-and further health professional trainees are expected to have professional values and professional attributes. These are prescribed in regulatory texts and documents making these discourses powerful. However, sometimes the counter ideology exists between the prescribed ideology and real world practice. I think getting control of that “in between” space can be a challenge for any governing institution- be it regulatory or education.
